Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024

Toronto, Canada, April 2, 2024. On April 8, 2024 we will experience a rare event - a solar eclipse.  The path for the total eclipse is shown in the figure below.

As fascinating as it can be to witness such an event, it also presents serious health and safety concerns that should be considered.  For example, looking directly at the eclipse without proper eye protection can cause irreparable eye damage.  This is because the moon's gravity bends and focuses solar electromagnetic emissions, increasing the intensity of ultraviolet that hits the earth.  Being un-prepared for mid-day total darkness can increase risks when working (or driving) in areas that are dependent on natural light.  Be sure to mark your calendars, check the timing of the event in your area, and take measures to ensure you are able to work safely during the affected timeframe.   Be aware that there will be many spectators planning on arriving to certain locations along the path of the eclipse, so traffic patterns and commutes may be atypical, and there may be certain areas that you may therefore wish to avoid! If you are unsure about how best to work safely or adjust your work routine during this time period, speak with your supervisor or reach out to your employer for additional support.  For more information, check out this link from the Canadian Space Agency, that has some good (short) videos: https://www.asc-csa.gc.ca/eng/astronomy/eclipses/total-solar-eclipse.asp.  Alternatively, this link from NASA provides good safety information as well: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/
