Our History

Irv Thompson, David Roach and Mark Hughes formed Thompson Roach & Hughes Consulting in 1992, with a collective approach to delivering excellence in occupational health and safety.  As TRH’s client base expanded geographically, subsidiaries were formed in Ontario, USA and Mexico.  To meet demand for in-person and self-instructional courses in health and safety, TRH Services Group Inc. was formed.  Over three decades, TRH pioneered and built the largest HSE management services firm in eastern Canada.  Mark Hughes became the sole owner following the passing of Irv Thompson and David Roach.

John Murphy founded Resource Environmental Associates Limited in 1991, with the goal of providing best-in-class occupational hygiene technical and regulatory affairs services to major manufacturers and public sector clients.  The firm’s service scope expanded with time to include substantial work in HSE program development and evaluation, hazardous materials management, HSE professional engineering, and training.  Operations expanded in the Caribbean with REA Envirohealth International, and in the USA with Resource EHS America.

In 2021, John Murphy formulated a vision and plan for a new organization – CrossSafety.  The goal was to create - by acquisition and amalgamation of the strongest HSE specialist firms in southern Ontario – an employee-owned, professionally managed organization, offering a comprehensive suite of HSE management, consulting, engineering and educational services to clients of all sizes across all sectors, with capacity to develop HSE human resources to meet marketplace needs, and advance the HSE profession.

In 2023, the TRH and REA companies were combined into CrossSafety, and their training services were consolidated under the SkillsCross brand.  Our foundational firms are among the most reputable, earliest established, and longest operating HSE professional firms in Canada, providing CrossSafety’s clients with a combined six+ decades of experience.
